2021 Klondike Derby

After much hard thinking and talking to Scouters and Cascade County Health Department a normal Klondike is impossible given the current guidelines in regard to gatherings. Instead we encourage each Troop to do its own Klondike with their own relay for the trophy. We hope to have a Camping Committee representative at each event. Your troop can do an overnight or day event. We would like you to put together a five minute video of this relay that we can post on the Committee Facebook page. Please also record a skit. The tin foil dinner competition should also be performed and judged by a camping committee member. Troops are not required to do a SELF KLONDIKE for the trophy but can do a Winter Camp instead and produce a video to share with the District. There will be a patch designed by Troop 110 for those who participate, any Troop doing a video will get patches. Click here for the updated leader guide, and we will discuss further at this week’s district committee meeting.

District Updates

Lewis and Clark District Scouters,

Below you will find a few updates for the district:

Halloween Trunk or Treat

I know we are all struggling to get new youth involved in scouting since we were unable to have recruiting events in the class rooms this year. Tim Steele thought that a Trunk Or Treat event might help us all bring some much needed attention to scouting in Great Falls. We have secured a location in the parking lot of the Hide Out Lounge 2401 12th Ave South. We will be there from 3-5pm on the 31st of October. The idea is to set up one vehicle from each Troop or Pack that is interested in Participating. They will have representatives from their unit handing out treats to community members. The treats can have a sticker with contact information for the troop or pack on it and if the parents are interested in joining scouts, we will have a sign up table with applications ready to be filled out and turned in to the unit of choice. I have attached some different options of labels and cards that can be used to pass out. Feel free to decorate your vehicle for the holiday, bring unit banners and flags. Dress up and have fun with the kids.

Cub Scout Chariot Races

Unfortunately due to the current circumstances with COVID we have to indefinitely postpone the Cub Scout Chariot Races that were originally scheduled take place on December 5th.

Cub Scout Day Camp

I am currently looking for individuals to get involved with running 2021 Cub Scout Day Camp. There is a webinar this weekend that will provide more information about Day Camp. Please let me know if you or someone you know would be interested in helping with Day Camp and/or attending the online conference.

Please let me know if there are any questions or concerns about any of the items above. Try to stay warm this weekend.

Yours in Scouting,

Levi Knight | Senior District Executive

Day Camp Canceled

After careful consideration by the District Day Camp Committee and District Leadership, in the interest of health and safety we have made the decision to cancel the Lewis & Clark District Day Camp.

We know it is a disappointing decision, but I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Melody, Kate, and all of the Day Camp volunteers for their hard work planning a safe and fun Day Camp this year.

Anyone who paid for Day Camp through this website will receive a refund via Square.

If your Pack paid at the Montana Council Scout Shop, please contact Ruth to process your refund.

4th of July Parades Information

Great Falls Parade

All Scouts are invited to march in the Great Falls 4th of July parade and help carry the huge US Flag that is near the start of the parade. Younger scouts walk under the flag to keep it off the ground while the older scouts and adults are around the outside.
This year’s parade will be about 2 miles (twice as long) as usual due to requirements to keep crowds spaced out due to COVID-19. Face masks are strongly recommended. Please dress in full Scout uniform and prepare accordingly for the weather (sunscreen, water, etc.)

WHO: All Scouts BSA & Cub Scouts.
WHEN: 10:30am-12:30pm, Saturday 7/4/20
WHERE: Whittier Park adjacent to the civic center (on the south side). Either park or drop off scouts in the city parking lot accessible from River Drive next to Pacific Steel & Recycling’s headquarters since the streets will be closed.

Each unit is responsible for its members and collecting required Activity Consent Forms. We need all the hands we can get and it DOES count for service hours! Due to the longer route if there are people interested in doing only the first half or second half we can make substitutions when we pass the half-way point at the Civic Center.

Please RSVP to Keith King via email kaking20@yahoo.com or message @Troop4GF on Facebook if your unit is going to help.
The parade committee also needs volunteers to set up the parade route. Contact Lola Sheldon-Galloway (406) 750-4721 by Thursday if you are interested and able to help Friday night and/or early Saturday morning.

Black Eagle Parade

Contact Ruth Fischer at the Council Offices for details: 406-761-6000.

Choteau Parade

If you are interested in participating in the Choteau Parade, contact Steve Dogiakos 406-203-4679 before Thursday.

Parade line up starts at 9am at the Breen Oil bulk plant on the south side of Choteau. the parade begins promptly at 10 am. The rules are a little different this year to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions:

  • No walkers this year – all participants must be in a vehicle, on a horse, or riding a bike.
  • No candy throwing.
  • The route is very different.

For more details and rule changes, see the Choteau Chamber of Commerce website.

District Backpacking Trip

Next month, July 28th-30th, will be our district backpacking trip for Scouts in the Lewis and Clark District.  This trip is limited to a maximum of 8 Scouts so that we are in compliance with National Forest Service wilderness camping group size requirements.

Participating Scouts must be at least 14 or have already earned their 1st Class Rank.  In addition, this is a backpacking trip into the wilderness backcountry and participating Scouts must be capable of carrying all of their gear for about 14 miles over mountain passes, across streams, and potentially over/under/around any trees that have fallen on trail.

In addition, each Scout must have a backpack with a hip belt that fits them well and can store all of their needs for a weekend.  Scouts must bring their own backpack, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, mess kit, clothes, etc.  In addition, due to the current environment of precautions we now live in, we need each Scout to sleep individually in their own shelter.  Therefore, we also need each Scout to provide their own tent.  We may have a couple of extra one man tents that Scouts can borrow, but we do not have enough available for every Scout.

If you have any questions about the tent situation, please don’t hesitate to call, email, or text Kyle Roberts 868-5648 or kylerobertsfirst@me.com.

There will be a planning meeting on Wednesday 7/8 at 6:30pm at Lions Park (under the pavilion if it is raining).  At this meeting we will hand out maps, provide a pack list, discuss food needs, and shakedown packs to ensure that everyone is bringing the necessary gear (but also leaving at home extraneous stuff).

The trip is always a lot of fun and the Scouts will learn many new skills while having a memorable adventure through a truly spectacular landscape!

Kyle needs to know as soon as possible what Scouts are interested in joining us for this trip.  Please call/text Kyle if your Scout or someone in your troop wants to be a part of this experience.
