District Meeting Minutes

The meeting was opened at 7:30 pm with 11 District members in attendance. Thanks to all units in attendance and a request from Bill for every unit in the District to have a representative attend the District Meeting.

Minutes of the March meeting were approved.
Welcome, Introductions and Recognitions – Bill thanked Dr. Chuck Jennings for coordinating the recent ICL breakfast which raised approximately $14,000. Bill thanked ASM Stephen Boyd for his efforts in coordinating a pinewood derby event in conjunction with the Great Falls customs car show. Bill thanked Deanna Rutten for Coordinating the Districts Scouting for Food drive which collected and donated over 21,000 pounds of food.

Old/New Business Upcoming Events – Trail to First Class, April 11-13, 2014 at Log Gulch on Holter Lake; MT Council Annual Convention, May 204, Billings, MT; District Award Banquet, May 9, 2014, 6 pm, 2900 9th Avenue South (United Church of Christ); Cub Day Camp, June 9-11, 2014 Wolves/Bears, June 12-14, 2014, Webelos, June 13, 2014, Tigers, all at Medicine River Scout Center (MRSC); MT Council Camporee, June 19-22, Townsend, MT.

Upcoming Training – Basic Outdoor Leader Training, April 11-13, 2014, at Trail to First Class campout has been cancelled due to lack of trainers.
Committee Reports –

MRSC: Peter Jennings provided updated of MRSC that the septic tank has been located and he is coordinating with a local plumbing company to determine its usefulness. Also, he will be attending a Silver Beaver meeting on April 22, 2014 to discuss Silver Beaver involvement with MRSC.

Camping: Bill provided a report from camping committee. No Spring Camporee due to MT Council Camporee in June. Looking at a possible two mile hike/fishing trip on the Missouri river May 17 or 18, 2014.

Advancement/Eagle Board: Bill provided a report from eagle board. Two new approvals. Tim Locke has issued 12 Lowes $100 gift cards council wide. Plenty still available for approved eagle projects.

OA: Tanner Dodge stated units should schedule OA elections this week if interested with him or Paul Grosvold. OA requirements include, Scouts must be first class or higher, have accumulated 15 nights of camping (only one long term camp can be included), elected by peers in Troop and approved by their Scoutmaster. Also, OA will celebrate 100 years of OA at MT Council Camporee. They need OA members to be present. Scouts are encouraged to bring musical instruments for the OA led pep band Saturday night.

TFC: Tanner also provided an update on the Trail to First Class Campout (run by OA), April 11-13, 2014 at Log Gulch on Holter Lake. Cost is free to attend; however, if Scouts want a “great looking” patch, the cost will be $5. Money will be collected at TFC. A list of TFC courses has been developed and was posted to the blog. Still not too late to register. Troops are asked to conduct Paul Grosvold or Keith Hasbrouck to register.

Scouting for Food: Bill provided a report from the committee chair. Huge success with 21 units participating and over 21,000 pounds of food collected and donated to Great Falls Food Bank.

District Awards Banquet: None. Still set for May 9, 2014, 6 pm at the United Church of Christ, 2900 9th Avenue South. Chili and/or cornbread cook off will begin at 5 pm. Participants can submit either their favorite chili or cornbread recipes or both. Other menu items include hot dogs, chicken, dessert and drinks. There is no cost to attend.

Award Banquet Committee still accepting award nominations for Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Venturing Advisor, Scouter, and Volunteer of the year. Nomination forms posted to the blog.

Day Camp: Ken Roberts stated the Day Camp is on track. April 15, 2014, last day to register with $10 discount. After April 15, 2014, cost to attend is $55.

ICL: Aaron Weissman stated the district is trying to wrap up ICL campaign by first week of May 2014. Units still need to schedule an ICL presentation include Troops 7, 4 and 43 and Pack 7. Please call Aaron to schedule.

Membership: Stu Brown stated he is planning the District membership drive for May 2014. Location to be determined. Stay tuned for more details.

District Executive Report – Dustin provided an update on ICL. District currently at 60% of its $60,000 goal. District is looking for new District Chairman as Bill’s term expires in May 2014. Forward names to Dustin of potential candidates. One of the Districts points of emphasis this year will be to work on scout retention.

District Commissioner Report – Rex stated he has two new Unit Commissioners, Alex Archibald and John Wallace. Rex also stated the MT Council was in need of Commissioner volunteers for the camporee in June. Contact Rex if you can help.

District Chair Report – Bill stated the District website domain was allowed to expire as it was anticipated the new Council website would be up and running. The Council website launch has been delayed. Dustin will work with Jay Tuss to get the District website back on line. Bill also stated he is working on a Scoutmaster/Cubmaster cracker barrel at fire ring at the scout office in May or June. Purpose will be for all leaders to gather, discuss best practices, network, etc. without scouts. Date and time to be determined.
